West Austin TX Sedation Dentist
At Patrick M. Jaeckle, DDS, our compassionate team and dentist empathize with patients who experience extreme anxiety when visiting – or thinking about visiting – the dentist. Because taking excellent care of your teeth is essential to continued oral health, we offer oral sedation to patients who want to follow through with dental care but simply cannot get past their nerves. Rest assured, we meet patients with widely varying emotions and experience, and look forward to providing each one with a relaxing, wonderful experience.
What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is an option offered by Dr. Jaeckle for deep relaxing during your dental visit. He will provide you with a pill from a class of drugs called “sedatives” which affect your nervous system. The result is a calming effect. Either before your visit or when you arrive, you will take a pill, such as Valium or Ativan, by mouth. By the time you recline in the dental chair, you will feel extremely calm. Because the effects will continue to last throughout and after your visit, you will need a friend or loved one to drive you home. You may need to rest until the following day, so you should clear your daily activities for the remainder of the day.
What Are the Benefits?
You should feel overjoyed – rather than embarrassed – to take advantage of oral sedation. This simple sedation option can completely change your outlook on making visits to the dentist. Consider the following benefits of oral sedation when considering this option:
- While you may have heard of IV sedation, choosing oral sedation, or the pill form, is more budget-friendly
- You may experience an amnesic effect from oral sedation – this means that while you be able to respond to oral cues during your visit, you may not remember some or all of the events once the sedative wears off
- Oral sedation is particularly beneficial if you dislike needles, since you will take a pill by mouth – this means no IV insertion or nervousness during novocaine injections
- You will be able to receive the dental services you need and want comfortably and in a relaxed state
Am I A Good Candidate?
Do you experience extreme nerves at the thought of undergoing a dental procedure or simply visiting the dentist? Have you put off dental visits for extended periods of time because you feel too anxious? If you want dental treatment but your emotions get the best of you, oral sedation may make a wonderful addition to your dental experience. Dr. Jaeckle will provide a thorough examination, and will ask you about your past and current health status to determine whether you are healthy enough, and to ensure you are not taking any medications that may interact with oral sedatives.
